Can't Jail the Spirit is an exhibit of Tom Manning's paintings of political prisoners, freedom fighters, the earth and people struggling against oppression. For his actions, he became a political prisoner and has taught himself to paint inside the prison walls.

March 2 and 3, 2007 "The Hardest Question Ever," theater and discussion
The Indicator Species
This event is a shadow puppet show about prisons and violence in our towns and cities, followed by a discussion. The show aims to create a dialogue around how society encourages violence and then punishes those who are violent.

The purpose of this day-long workshop for families of the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated is to develop an agenda for addressing the many issues these communities face. Speakers include Brenda Pearson from the Women's Prison Association, Dr. Divine Pryor and Eddie Ellis from the New Leadership Policy Group, and Margaret DuLuca from Women Who Never Give Up.

We will unite the children and the care takers with the inmates for 4 hours of structured literacy activities, a family meal and a parenting workshop. Our Family Day will center on celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Family Days are Conducted every 2nd Saturday of the Month (April 14th and May 12th are our dates for the next gatherings) Event limited to inmates and their family and or care takers. Free.

March 12, 2007 "Legacy of Torture: The War Against the Black Liberation Movement," film

This short film documents the cases of eight former Black Panther Party members, all currently incarcerated on decades-old charges. Evidence to support their charges was largely extracted through torture, and the film investigates the American government's ongoing attempts to overturn habeas corpus and other human rights guaranteeing fair trial.

This film examines not only the life inside the walls of Supermax isolation, but the possibility of a successful life in society after incarceration. The moral dilemmas and effectiveness of isolation are weighed and scrutinized. Do the increasingly popular Supermax facilities create emotionally unstable criminals and return them to society more dangerous then when they were incarcerated?

I Dream a World is a youth art program based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the AFSC's opposition to the death penalty as a violent institution. The youth are encouraged to create artwork expressing their thoughts and reactions to the death penalty and throughout the month of March we display this artwork in the AFSC building. On this day the public is invited to come and see the artwork created by the youth as well as listen to speakers discuss this issue. Food and beverages will be provided.

Arthur Robin Williams spent a year traveling across the United States hearing the stories of everyday Americans affected by drugs and/or drug policy. He visited drug reform agencies and community based organizations with the intention of building a case for shifting the nation's policy emphasis from law enforcement toward public health when dealing with substance abuse. He'll share his work.
